One developer who knows the code

[01]Who it's for

This is for you if ...

  1. 01

You have a product in production that nobody is really looking after anymore.

  2. 02

You've lost touch with your previous developer or agency and are left with code nobody knows.

  3. 03

You're running outdated versions of Laravel, PHP or Node and know it's a risk.

  4. 04

You have a long wishlist but no dedicated developer to work through it.

  5. 05

You need technical advice on decisions, but not a full-time hire.

[02]Deliverables

What you get, and what you don't

Maintenance is about avoiding expensive surprises, and about having a developer who knows the code when you need one.

What you get

  • An initial review of code, hosting and security with a prioritized plan
  • Ongoing updates to the framework, packages and dependencies
  • Uptime and error monitoring, so problems get caught early
  • Backups that get tested regularly
  • Time every month for fixes, improvements and new features
  • A short status update: what got done and what's next
  • Technical advice on architecture, vendors and priorities

What you don't get

  • Vague promises about response times. What counts as critical and how to reach me is written into the agreement.
  • Big new projects within the fixed fee. Those are scoped separately, so you always know what you're paying for.
  • Responsibility for systems I don't have access to. We define up front what the agreement covers.

[03]Four ways to work together

Pick the model that fits your situation

Not everyone needs the same thing. These are the four ways I help with products in production.

Many clients start with a code audit or a takeover and move to an ongoing agreement once they've seen how I work. You can also start straight away with a retainer if you already know what you have.

Whatever the model, the code lives in your repository and the important parts get written down. That keeps you independent, of me too.

  • 01

    Retainer

A fixed number of hours per month for maintenance and development. Predictable for you, and the code gets looked after continuously.

  • 02

    Takeover

You have a product someone else built. I get to know the code, document the essentials and take over.

  • 03

    Code audit

A well-defined review of code, security and hosting with a prioritized report. Fixed price, and the report is yours.

  • 04

    Technical partner

Advice on architecture, vendors and roadmap when you don't have a CTO but need someone to think it through with you.

[04]Process

How we get started

The first stretch is about getting to know your product. After that, it becomes routine.

  1. Intro call

20 minutes, free. You tell me about the product and what worries you most.

  2. Review

I review the code, hosting and security and put together a prioritized plan, most critical first.

  3. Stabilize

Updates, backups and monitoring get put in place, so the foundation is secure.

  4. Ongoing

We agree on a fixed rhythm with time for improvements and a short status on what got done.

[05]Pricing

How much does web app maintenance cost?

A retainer is a fixed monthly price for an agreed number of hours. A code audit has a fixed price. You get both in writing before we start.

Price

Priced to fit the scope

You'll know the price before we start.

All prices exclude VAT. I only work with businesses.

What drives the price

  • Number of systems, and how old their versions are
  • How many hours you want for new development
  • Response time requirements for incidents
  • Condition of the codebase and test coverage
  • Hosting and monitoring that need setting up

Typical timelineWe agree on a timeline that fits the task

  • Pricing agreed up front
  • You own the code from day one
  • Reply within 1 business day

[06]Stack

The stack, and why

I mainly maintain products built with Laravel, PHP and modern JavaScript.

Laravel and PHP
Upgrades, security fixes and new features in existing codebases.
React and Next.js
Frontend updates and performance work, without users noticing.
Error and uptime monitoring
You get an alert when something fails, instead of hearing it from customers.
Automated deployment
Small, safe changes that can be rolled back if something goes wrong.
Documentation
The essentials written down, so the product never depends on one person, me included.

[07]FAQ

Questions I often get

Didn't find your answer? Ask me directly
Can you take over code someone else wrote?

Yes. I start with a review and give you an honest assessment of quality, risks and priorities. You'll know what you have before you decide anything.

What's included in a retainer?

Updates, monitoring, backups and a set number of hours for fixes and improvements. Bigger jobs are scoped separately, so you always know what you're paying for.

How fast do you respond if something goes down?

It's written into the agreement, so there's no guesswork. We agree on what counts as critical and how you reach me.

What if you get sick or stop freelancing?

Fair question. Your code lives in your own repository, it's documented, and it's built with widely used tools that lots of developers know. Another developer can take over if needed.

What do I get from a code audit?

A report with the biggest risks and improvements, prioritized and with an estimate of what each fix costs. You can use it whether or not you continue with me.

Can you be our technical partner without being an employee?

Yes. Many smaller companies don't need a full-time CTO, but they do need someone to help with technical decisions. That can be part of a retainer.

Who's looking after your product right now?

Tell me what you have and what worries you. You'll get an honest take on how to keep it healthy.
